View source for Sources for studying Memphis-Misraim

The sources for '''[[Memphis-Misraim|Memphis-Misraïm]]''' include constitutions, diplomas, organisational histories, library catalogues and modern historical studies. They answer different questions: a constitution describes an organisation's rules, while a claim of ancient descent requires corroboration beyond that organisation's own narrative.

== Current organisational evidence ==
For present practice, use a body's own constitution and public statements, while keeping its claims about other bodies separate. The [[Memphis-Misraim organisations and recognition|organisations page]] links to named examples. The Grand College of Rites' ''Collectanea'' catalogue also identifies the historical degree materials in its publications; a contents list should not be mistaken for current lodge practice.<ref name="collectanea">[https://grandcollegeofrites.org/collectanea/ Grand College of Rites of the United States of America, <i>Collectanea</i>, public contents catalogue, Memphis series]. Accessed 25 September 2026.</ref>

== Assessing a claim ==
When comparing accounts, record the date, country, governing body and edition. Distinguish an original charter from a later transcription; an appointment from its acceptance by another organisation; and a symbolic origin story from evidence of institutional continuity. Differences between documents may reflect a changed system rather than a simple error in numbering.
