Prince Hall Freemasonry is a branch of Freemasonry that traces its origins to Prince Hall, an African-American abolitionist, civil rights activist, and the founder of the first lodge for African-American Freemasons in the late 18th century. Prince Hall Freemasonry is an important and distinct tradition within the broader landscape of Freemasonry, as it was instrumental in providing opportunities for African-Americans to join the fraternity at a time when they faced significant discrimination and segregation.

In 1775, Prince Hall and 14 other African-American men were initiated into a Masonic lodge attached to a British regiment stationed in Boston. Following the departure of the British regiment, these men formed African Lodge No. 1 under a limited Masonic warrant, granted by the Grand Lodge of Ireland in 1784. Prince Hall served as its first Worshipful Master.

The African Lodge No. 1 grew in membership and prominence, and in 1791, the lodge was granted a new charter by the Grand Lodge of England, recognising it as African Lodge No. 459. This charter granted the lodge greater independence and the ability to confer degrees on new members.

After Prince Hall's death in 1807, the lodge continued to expand and establish new lodges throughout the United States. By the early 19th century, the African Lodge No. 459 declared itself independent from the Grand Lodge of England, reorganising as the African Grand Lodge of North America, with its headquarters in Boston.

Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Prince Hall Freemasonry played a significant role in promoting civil rights and social justice for African-Americans. Many prominent African-American leaders, including W.E.B. Du Bois, Booker T. Washington, and Thurgood Marshall, were members of Prince Hall lodges.

It is governed by the Conference of Grand Masters Prince Hall Masons, Inc., which consists of over 40 Grand Lodges across the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean.
