'''The Morgan affair''' was the abduction and disappearance of William Morgan in western New York in 1826, after he arranged to publish a book claiming to disclose Masonic secrets. == Publication and abduction ==
Morgan lived in Batavia and worked with the printer David Miller on ''Illustrations of Masonry''. Following arrests on a theft allegation and then for debt, he was held at Canandaigua. After the debt was paid, men seized him outside the jail and took him away in a carriage. His subsequent fate remained unresolved.<ref name="courts" />

== The proceedings ==
Some defendants received sentences for involvement in the kidnapping. Elihu Mather, tried for conspiracy in November 1829, was acquitted. In 1830 the New York Supreme Court rejected the prosecution's application for a new trial; its decision discussed juror bias and a witness's protection against self-incrimination.<ref name="courts" />

The kidnapping proceedings did not establish how Morgan died.

== Political consequences ==
The Anti-Masonic Party carried the controversy into electoral politics. William Wirt became its presidential candidate in 1832. Political prints show that the dispute generated propaganda on both sides. The crisis also disrupted Masonic organisations. == Later commemoration ==
Morgan remained a symbol for later opponents of secret societies. The National Christian Association, founded in 1868, erected a monument to him at Batavia in 1882.
