The Independent Order of Rechabites

The Independent Order of Rechabites is a friendly society that originated in the United Kingdom in 1835. It is founded on the principles of the biblical Rechabites, a nomadic tribe described in the Book of Jeremiah as abstaining from alcohol and living a simple, orderly life. The society offers mutual assistance and financial support to its members while encouraging them to live temperate and thrifty lives. Today, the organisation is active in many countries and continues to promote temperance and financial prudence among its members.

Organisational Structure

The Independent Order of Rechabites is structured into local branches, known as "tents," which are grouped into larger units referred to as "circles." Each tent is led by a "Chief Ruler," and the circles are overseen by a "District Ruler." The overall governance of the organisation falls under a Grand Lodge, which is responsible for formulating and enforcing rules, managing the society's finances, and overseeing the activities of the local tents and circles.

The society also maintains a ceremonial and symbolic structure, including the use of regalia, oaths, and ritualised meetings. It operates as a fraternal organisation with a hierarchical structure in which members progress through various ranks and degrees, each level carrying its own set of responsibilities, privileges, and regalia.

Degrees

The Independent Order of Rechabites offers several degrees or membership levels, each accompanied by distinct obligations and privileges. The specific degrees and their names may vary depending on the jurisdiction, but typically include:

• Junior Rechabite: This is the entry-level degree for new members. Junior Rechabites are generally not yet of legal drinking age and are considered to be in a probationary period.

• Rechabite: This represents the full membership degree. Rechabites are expected to abstain from alcohol and other intoxicants, and to embrace a simple and orderly lifestyle.

• Senior Rechabite: This degree is usually attained after a certain period of time as a Rechabite or upon completing designated tasks. Senior Rechabites may take on additional responsibilities within the society, such as mentoring Junior Rechabites.

• Past Chief Ruler: This is a honorary degree usually given to members who have served as Chief Ruler of a Tent or Circle.

• District Ruler: This is a degree held by members who have been elected to lead a Circle or District. This degree denotes leadership within the organisation.

• Grand Lodge Officers: These are members who have been elected to lead the Grand Lodge, the highest governing body of the society.

Each degree carries its own distinct set of obligations, privileges, and associated regalia.

Notable Members

As a fraternal organisation, the Independent Order of Rechabites has counted many notable members among its ranks throughout its history. However, due to the society's secretive nature and focus on mutual aid over publicity, information about its members remains relatively limited.

• William Ewart Gladstone, a British statesman who served as Prime Minister four times, Gladstone was a member of the Independent Order of Rechabites.
• Winston Churchill, the British statesman and Prime Minister who led the United Kingdom during World War II, was also a member of the Rechabites during his childhood.

It's important to note that the Order found particular resonance among working-class individuals as a means of coming together to provide mutual assistance and support, as well as promoting values of temperance and self-discipline.
