The Tyler

The Masonic Tyler is a senior officer in Freemasonry lodges who is entrusted with a range of responsibilities relating to security, ceremonial procedure, and other administrative duties. In some areas, the Tyler may also be referred to as the Outer or Inner Guard. They are granted special privileges during meetings and usually positioned outside the Lodge's door, physically safeguarding it and upholding traditions to prevent unauthorised individuals from entering. The Masonic Tyler's sword is traditionally held before them as a symbol of their role in guarding the Lodge. The responsibility for admitting Freemasons into the lodge primarily rests on their shoulders. However, in certain cases where prior arrangements have been made, this task may be delegated to another member. Talented Freemasons have the potential to earn recognition from Grand Lodges for their exceptional performance in this role, which further enhances the prestige and importance associated with this esteemed position.

Origins

The origins of the Masonic Tyler can be traced back to the days of the medieval stonemason guilds. he primary responsibility of this role was to protect a lodge during initiation ceremonies and ensure that only eligible members were granted access to these exclusive meetings. Furthermore, their responsibilities included safeguarding the members from any disruptions or damage, as well as supervising blockings and tylings. Over time, the role of the Tyler evolved. It came to entail standing as a guardian by the entrance of a meeting room, introducing visitors, collecting dues, and resolving disputes among fellow Masons, all while upholding strict confidentiality. In modern Masonry, Tylers still carry out these responsibilities, while also offering administrative assistance to the master and other officers when the need arises.

The Sword

The Masonic Tyler's sword has historically served as a symbol representing the important roles of stewardship and leadership within Freemasonry.
