The Astrological Principles of The Officers

In esoterically orientated lodges, many of the roles in the lodge can be seen as the embodiment of astrological principles. We'll start with the planetary attributions.

Sol - The Solar Principle

Rising in the east to enliven the day, thus the Worship Master embodies the Solar Principle bringing life to the lodge.

Here are some of the astrological principles attributed to the Sun:

  • Vitality and Energy: The Sun represents our life force, vitality, and energy. It is associated with our physical and mental strength, our ability to take action and make decisions, and our overall sense of purpose and direction.
  • Self-expression and Creativity: The Sun is also associated with self-expression and creativity. It is said to govern our individuality, personality, and ego, and our ability to shine and be noticed by others.
  • Leadership and Authority: The Sun is often linked with leadership, authority, and power. It is associated with our ability to lead and inspire others, to take charge and make decisions, and to project confidence and charisma.
  • Consciousness and Awareness: The Sun is also seen as representing our consciousness and awareness. It is associated with our ability to perceive and understand the world around us, and to seek knowledge and wisdom.
  • Health and Vitality: In traditional astrology, the Sun is linked with physical health and well-being. A strong Sun in a person's birth chart is said to indicate good health and vitality, while a weak or afflicted Sun can suggest health problems or lack of energy.

As the Worship Master rules the lodge, so the Sun is a powerful symbol in astrology, representing our core sense of self and purpose, our creativity and vitality, and our ability to lead and inspire others.

Saturn

The Junior Warden represents both the Sun at Midday and also "the sun behind the sun" - Saturn. [Edit: it should be noted that "the sun behind the sun" has been attributed to other astronomical bodies, including Pluto and the star, Sirius.] Alchemically symbolised by the metal Lead and through the Plumb (from the Latin, plumbem meaning lead) worn as the collar jewel of the Junior Warden.

It is the Junior Warden's duty to arrange refreshments for the lodge, and, typically, the 2 Stewards act as his assistants in this responsibility. Symbolically, it is also his duty to make certain that the members do not convert their refreshments into intemperance or excess. i.e. the enforcement of rules, regulations and discipline.
