Mark Master Degree
TThe Mark Master Degree is an extension of the Fellowcraft (2nd) Degree in Craft (Blue) Lodge Freemasonry. It is often considered a significant milestone in a Mason's personal journey and expands on the symbolism and teachings of the Fellowcraft Degree. The Mark Master degree is conferred by a separate body called the Mark Lodge or Mark Master Mason Lodge.
The Mark Master degree is considered a significant and important degree in the Masonic system, as it delves deeper into the teachings and symbolism of Freemasonry. The rituals and lessons of the Mark Master degree are based on the construction of King Solomon's Temple and the role of stonemasons in that endeavour. The degree focuses on the importance of each member's contribution to the overall success of a project and teaches lessons of personal responsibility, diligence, and the importance of leaving a mark on one's work.
During the degree, candidates are required to choose a unique symbol or mark that represents them, which is then recorded in the lodge's Book of Marks. This mark is used to identify the individual's work and contributions within the lodge and symbolises their commitment to the craft. The concept of the Mark Master degree can be traced back to the operative stonemasons' practice of marking their stones to identify their work and ensure they were paid for their labour.
The Mark Master degree is considered one of the "Capitular degrees" in the York Rite system, which also includes the Past Master, Most Excellent Master, and Royal Arch Mason degrees. These degrees are typically conferred by a body called the Chapter of Royal Arch Masons. While the specific rituals and lessons may vary between jurisdictions, the core teachings and symbolism of the Mark Master degree remain consistent across the Masonic world.
