Triple Tau and Shin
Triple Tau and Shin
The triple Tau is often interpreted to be representative of the letter Shin.
The name "Jesus" is an anglicised form of the Greek name Ἰησοῦς (Iēsous), which in turn is a Hellenisation of the Hebrew name Yeshua (ישוע) or Yehoshua (יְהוֹשֻׁעַ). The name Yeshua is a short form of Yehoshua, which means "YHWH (Yahweh/Jehova) is salvation" (the English version of this name is "Joshua")
The tetragrammaton YHVH (יהוה) is one of the Hebrew names of God, which is usually transliterated as Yahweh or Jehovah in English. The four Hebrew letters are Yodh (י), He (ה), Vav (ו), and He (ה) again.
The incorporation of the letter "Shin" (ש) into the tetragrammaton to form YHSVH (יהשוה), seems to stem from various mystical or esoteric interpretations. In some mystical traditions, the inclusion of "Shin" within the tetragrammaton is thought to represent the divine presence (Shekhinah) or the spirit of Messiah, thereby forming a variant of Yeshua's name, often associated with Jesus Christ.
However, this is not a traditional Jewish practice or belief and does not reflect mainstream linguistic or historical perspectives on the Hebrew language. This practice is more common in some Christian interpretations or in the context of various esoteric or mystical traditions.
In Qabalah, the Hebrew letter Shin is commonly attributed to the 31st path on the Tree of Life connecting Hod to Malkuth. The attribution to Shin is double, signifying both elemental fire and immortal spirit (Shekinah).
The Hebrew letter "Shin" holds a significant place within both Kabbalistic and Gematria interpretations.
Kabbalistic Perspective
In the Kabbalistic system, every Hebrew letter is associated with specific spiritual properties. The letter Shin is one of the three "mother letters" (Aleph, Mem, and Shin) in the Hebrew alphabet, as described in the "Sefer Yetzirah" (The Book of Creation), one of the most important texts in Jewish mysticism. The three mother letters represent three primal elements of the universe: Aleph for air, Mem for water, and Shin for fire.
The letter Shin is often associated with the divine attribute of change and transformation because of its connection with fire, a symbol for divine judgement and dynamic energy. Fire can purify, transform, and also destroy, symbolising the capacity for both creativity and destruction.
In some depictions, Shin is depicted as a flaming letter on the forehead of the golem, a creature of Jewish folklore, signifying the divine power that gives it life.
Shin also represents the Shema, the central prayer in Judaism, symbolising the essential unity of God.
Gematria Perspective
Gematria is a Jewish system of numerology in which the numerical values of letters, words, or phrases are calculated and then compared with other words to find similar numerical values. The purpose of this practice is to discover hidden meanings, correlations and patterns.
The Hebrew letter Shin is the 21st letter of the Hebrew alphabet, and it has a gematria value of 300. This numerical association can be used to derive various interpretations or correlations with other Hebrew words or phrases of the same numerical value.
It's also worth mentioning that the letter Shin has three prongs or branches, which are traditionally seen as representing different concepts like the three patriarchs (Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob), or the three divisions of the Jewish people (Priests, Levites, and Israelites).
Chapter 3 - Sephir Yetzirah
- The three mother [letters] Aleph, Mem, and Shin, their foundation is a pan (of a scale) of culpability and a pan of merit, and the tongue of decree decides between them.
- The three mothers - Aleph, Mem, Shin - a mighty mystery, most occult and most marvelous, sealed as with six rings, and from them proceed Fire, Water, [and Air]; these are subsequently differentiated into male and female. Three mothers - Aleph, Mem, Shin, their foundation. And from them were born fathers and all was created from them.
- The three mother letters - Aleph, Mem, and Shin - are air, water, and fire in the world. Heaven is created from Fire [the shin in shamayim]; the Earth from Water [the mem in mayim]; and the Air [the aleph in ’avir] which decides between the fire and the water.
- During the year, or in regards to time in general, these three mothers represent Hot, Cold, and Warm. The hot from the fire, the cold from the water, and the warm from the spiritual air, which again is an equalizer between them. These three mothers again represent in the Microcosm human form, male and female; the Head, the Belly, and the Chest. The head from the hot fire, the belly from cold water, and the chest from the warm air that lieth between them.
- These three mothers did He create, form, and design, and with the three mothers combine in the world, and in the year, and in Man, both male and female. :
- He caused Aleph to reign in the air, and crowned it, and combined one with the other, and with these He sealed the Air in the world, the warmth of the year, and the chest (the lungs) in man; the male with Aleph-Mem-Shin, the female with Aleph-Shin-Mem.
- He caused Mem to predominate in Water, and crowned it, and combined it with others, and formed Earth in the world, cold in the year, and the belly in the soul, male and female, male with Mem-Aleph-Shin and female with Mem-Shin-Aleph.
- He caused Shin to reign in Fire and crowned it, and He combined one with the other, and sealed them, as heaven in the universe, as heat in the year, and as the head of Man and Woman. [Male with Shin-Aleph-Mem and female with Shin-Mem-Aleph.]
