Hiram, the King of Tyre, was a figure of immense international importance during the Iron Age. He is well-remembered for his alliance with King Solomon of Israel and their construction of the great temple in Jerusalem, though he had already held considerable influence before that point. His naval expertise enabled Phoenicia to trade extensively throughout the Mediterranean, while his leadership skills landed him a place in contemporary historical records and references made by later authors such as Homer and Plato. His rich legacy still shapes many aspects of politics in the Near East to this day.
