Knights of Malta
Knights of Malta
The Knights Hospitaller of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, also known as the Knights of Malta, is a Catholic military order that has a long and rich history dating back to the 11th century. Originally established as a hospice in Jerusalem to offer care for pilgrims, the Order later developed into a powerful military entity during the Crusades. Over time, it underwent a transformation and became a humanitarian and chivalrous organisation.
History
Foundation
The Order of Saint John was founded in Jerusalem around 1048 by Blessed Gerard, a nobleman who dedicated himself to assisting sick and injured pilgrims who were visiting the Holy Land. Originally, the establishment was a modest religious community referred to as the Hospital of Saint John. Over time, its commitment to providing care for the sick gained the support of numerous European rulers and nobles.
Military Order
During the late 11th century, the Order assumed a military role in the First Crusade, with the objective of safeguarding Christian pilgrims and territories in the Levant. They displayed remarkable courage and bravery in countless battles, earning a reputation as highly skilled warriors. As their influence expanded, they were granted additional lands and privileges throughout Europe.
Relocation to Malta
After the fall of Acre in 1291, the Knights were compelled to depart from the Holy Land and embarked on a journey through different territories before eventually finding a settlement on the island of Rhodes. From there, they proceeded with their mission to protect Christianity and provide assistance to those in need. In 1530, Emperor Charles V granted the Knights the island of Malta, and they subsequently established their new headquarters there.
The Great Siege
During the Great Siege of Malta in 1565, the Knights of Malta encountered one of their most significant challenges. Under the leadership of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, the Ottoman Empire initiated a large-scale invasion with the objective of capturing the island. The Knights , under the leadership of Grand Master Jean Parisot de Valette, successfully defended the island against overwhelming odds, repelling the invaders and preserving Christianity in Europe.
Later Years
Over time, the Knights of Malta transitioned their primary focus from military activities to engaging in charitable and diplomatic endeavours. They gained recognition for their comprehensive medical services and generous philanthropic efforts, which involved the establishment of hospitals and providing assistance to the underprivileged and those in need.
