The Officers in a Craft Lodge

In a Masonic craft lodge, there are typically five main officer roles:

The Worshipful Master (WM) is the head of the lodge and presides over all meetings and ceremonies.

The Senior Warden (SW) is the second in command and presides over the lodge in the absence of the WM.

The Junior Warden (JW) is responsible for overseeing the time during meetings, and for ensuring that the lodge is opened and closed in due form.

The Treasurer is responsible for the financial management of the lodge, including collecting dues and maintaining accurate records.

The Secretary is responsible for keeping accurate records of all meetings and correspondence, and for maintaining the membership roll.

The Senior Deacon (SD) and Junior Deacon (JD) who act as messengers and assistants to the WM.

The Senior Steward (SS) and Junior Steward (JS) who are responsible for the preparation and serving of refreshments during meetings.

The Inner Guard (IG) who is responsible for ensuring the security of the lodge while in session.

The Tyler, who is responsible for security of the lodge while it is closed and to ensure that only properly initiated members are allowed to enter.

The Worshipful Master

Situated in the east, the Worshipful Master (WM) is the head of a craft lodge and presides over all meetings and ceremonies. The title "Worshipful" is an old English term that is used as a form of respect, similar to "Your Honor" for a judge. The WM is elected by the members of the lodge and typically serves for a one-year term.

The WM is responsible for the overall operation and management of the lodge, including overseeing the work of the other officers and ensuring that the rituals and ceremonies are performed correctly. They also have the authority to make decisions on behalf of the lodge and to preside over all meetings, including initiation ceremonies and other special events.

The WM is also responsible for the moral and ethical guidance of the members of the lodge and is expected to lead by example, demonstrating the values and principles of the craft. They are also responsible for ensuring that the members are informed about the purpose and goals of the lodge and that they are engaged in the various activities and programs.

The WM is also a representative of the Grand Lodge, the governing body of freemasonry in a particular jurisdiction. They are responsible for ensuring that the lodge is in compliance with the rules and regulations set forth by the Grand Lodge, and for communicating with other lodges and officials within the jurisdiction.

It is also important to note that The Worshipful Master role is a voluntary position and its not a permanent role, an individual can serve for one year and then step down, also the role of WM is not an easy one, it requires a lot of dedication, time, and commitment.

The Senior Warden

In addition, the Senior Warden is responsible for the physical well-being of the lodge, ensuring that the building and property are well-maintained and that the lodge is opened and closed in due form, which means he is responsible for the safety and security of the lodge while it is open.

The Senior Warden also serves as a representative of the lodge to the community and is responsible for promoting the ideals and values of the craft. They are also expected to be a role model for the members of the lodge, demonstrating the principles and teachings of the craft in their daily lives.

The Junior Warden

Positioned in the South, the Junior Warden (JW) is responsible for overseeing the time during meetings, and for ensuring that the lodge is opened and closed in due form. The JW is also elected by the members of the lodge and typically serves for a one-year term, concurrent with the term of the Worshipful Master (WM) and Senior Warden (SW).

Junior and Senior Deacons

The Junior Deacon (JD) and Senior Deacon (SD) are officers in a Masonic craft lodge, and act as messengers and assistants to the Worshipful Master (WM). Both the JD and SD are elected by the members of the lodge and typically serve for a one-year term, concurrent with the term of the WM, Senior Warden (SW) and Junior Warden (JW).

The Junior and Senior Deacons are responsible for assisting the WM during meetings and ceremonies, and for carrying out the tasks and duties assigned to them by the WM. These tasks may include carrying messages between the WM and the other officers, or assisting with the preparation and setup of the lodge room for meetings and ceremonies.

In addition, the Junior and Senior Stewards are also responsible for assisting the WM in the overall operation and management of the lodge. This can include tasks such as managing the lodge's finances or organising social events.

They also take care of visitors and guests, meals, and refreshments.
